The Challenge
This Holland homeowner purchased an older downtown home with a mudroom that lacked basic functionality — no direct exterior access and original single-pane windows that offered little insulation against West Michigan winters. The space wasn't working for the household and needed a full rethink, not just a cosmetic refresh.
Our Approach
We started by removing the existing walls to open up the space and re-framed to accommodate two new ThermaTru doors and Alliance Windows replacements sized for both performance and natural light. During construction we discovered the roof structure was undersupported — rather than work around it, we raised the framing and installed new roof rafters to properly carry the load. We finished the exterior with ProVia vinyl siding and composite trim for a clean, durable result that matches the character of the downtown Holland neighborhood.

The Transformation
What was a disconnected, drafty, single-pane mudroom is now a functional entry point with proper doors, energy-efficient windows, and a structurally sound roof above it. The Holland homeowners got the accessibility and usability they were looking for — and the peace of mind that the work was done right, even where it wasn't visible. That's the kind of detail that protects a home for the long run.
